Band Of Brothers |
I could waffle about it all day but I'll condense it down to the main Talking Points with a look forward to Wexford also.
System
I know everything went right for us yesterday but fundamentally our system is spot on...It suits our best players style of play.
Adrian Reid and Derek Crilly are natural attacking players and Andy and Conor Rafferty have the engine and mentality to compliment them.
That sets a solid foundation for us.
Because of Foundation,
Our Tactic's then can be worked on, yesterday we varied our approach play to Shane Lennon and it worked perfectly.
Sure, we sent some long balls in on top of Shane but we also played low ball and precise balls into space to him.
Then, on other occasions, we used Shane as decoy, when Laois expected the ball to sent to him it didn't come.
we ran it through the middle.
or
We played the ball to both corner men.
or
we kicked from range.
On top of that our Match Ups Worked also
It helps that the team picked on merit, it helps even more that defensively lads are asked to play to a role rather than a position. Just look at the two McGee's yesterday for Donegal for example.
It meant that it didn't matter who played where there was no confusion.
Straightaway, Derek Crilly went out right half on Begley and Dessie went right out to forty to pick up the very much overrated Donie Kingston and John O'Brien picked up Ross Munnelly.
Adrian Reid then, ended up starting the game corner back! but, this became irrelevant as he knew his marking role, and his position on the field didn't matter.
As a result, It went all long way in helping us come out on top with every match up defensively.
I mentioned earlier last week that Gally has worked on his KickOuts
Be it the speed of them or the accuracy of them, they have no doubt improved and he is well able to it.
Yesterday, combined with excellent breaking runs from our midfielders and half forwards we dominated possession.
Gally's arrows were superb and fundamental to this and with gained confidence and more practice it can be improved even more so ahead of Wexford in two weeks.
Speaking of Cooley, Brian White was man of the match yesterday.
He came he saw he conquered. right from the get-go.
The thing with Whiteser if we get anything from play from him it's a bonus.
As his freetaking is what he is there for. His accuracy from placed balls is crucial.
He's the outhalf that keeps the scoreboard ticking over, he rewards the prop's hard work and it then allows them to do the donkey work that bit easier.
In fact, He demoralised Laois on his own yesterday....
Punishing every mistake they made,
every foul they made
and
kilt off any hope they felt they had in the second half.
Oh what Mickey Harte could have done with him yesterday!
So now on to Wexford
Portlaoise as good as it was, is over.
We now, need to move on, bring everything we brought that I’ve talked about above and some more.
Taking on the favourites tag and coping with the pressure of home advantage for example.
Our focus should be to stay grounded and look for a consistent performance again, not a crack at leinster.
After all, Wexford beat us more than convincingly in Drogheda and were the best team we faced after Derry all year.
They are a very good team, much better Leinster pedigree than us in recent seasons and also had an opportunity to scout us yesterday.
They'll have no fear of us whatsoever.
It is Important, like yesterday, we learn from more league mistakes, prepare for them adequately to improve as team and give ourselves the best chance to get another victory.
fingers crossed
