D'laois Game on D'Youtube

There is alot of shite on youtube these days

but, this video is not one of those, in fact

It will be the 4 minutes and 10 seconds you'll spend all year....

Things i like when i watch this video....

Adrian Reid's score (in the exact same patch of grass he scored in the league),

Local Snapper Arthur Kinahan,

Brian White's legs,

A glimpse of Pepe's positive introduction,

Martin O'Rourke's tap on the back,

John Bingham's Jamie Carresque score (is he the 2013 version of Eamonn McAuley only better?),

PK's tattoo's,

The perfectly timed gust of wind that helped Shane Lennon's left foot effort curl over the bar, The woeful Laois defending for our goal,

The commentator saying the words 'Louth' 'intelligence' 'kickouts' in the same sentence!,

The 'We-give-it-away-and-they-give-it-straight-back-dance' which happened so many times on sunday,

The Laois keeper frantically waving wide for every shot we took,

Kevin Rogers knee bandage,

Jim McEneaney's Knee bandage,

The Smirk on AOR's face at the end.

Home Grown, back to the Rhythm and beat of the Radio!

WELL DONE

Jenny McGuinness

Abit of a Tongue twister, but Jenny was selected on the 2013 Tesco HomeGrown NFL Division 4 team of the year!

Great achievement by the Stabannon lady and hopefully the first of  a wave of recognition for our ladies this season!

Louth Juniors were defeated last night by a point to Cabhan!

Louth Juniors

Tonight in Dowdashill our Juniors play Reigning Leinster champions Cavan, very weird saying that!

This game is not to be seen as an afterthought though, As Our possible team is quite strong and a number of players could force themselves into the current senior panel and the players who are on the fringes of the senior panel will get some much needed playing time!

I'd like to add, a number of players feature from the  are-you-watching-mister-O'Rourke team that I picked a couple of weeks back will be involved.

It's great to see lads who are playing well at club level rewarded. My only gripe would be the lack of Under21's from last year and this year involved.

The Possible team

1. Joe Flanagan O'Raths

2. Gary O'Hare Naps 3. Bernard Mulligan Joe's 4. Peter Nixon SOM

5.Richard Brennan Cooley
6.Sean Brassil Plunketts
7.KeithMcLaughlin SOM

8. Bevan Duffy St Fechins 9. Danny O'Connell Roche

10.Paddy Sheelan Cooley
11.Eoin O'Connor Pats
12.Cathal Bellew Kilkerley

13. Shaun Hand Kilkerley
14. Shane O'Hanlon Gers
15. Paul Carrie Hunterstown

Both Cavan and ourselves have gotten off to great win's in the Championship, so there will be alot of interest tonight. The buzz off the senior wins means the lads involved tonight will be pushing themselves to impress even more.

Should be a good game and a nice crowd as a result.

Best of Luck lads, the match throws in at 7.30pm

Laois Talking Points

Wow! super performance!!

Band Of Brothers

I could waffle about it all day but I'll condense it down to the main Talking Points with a look forward to Wexford also.

System
I know everything went right for us yesterday but fundamentally our system is spot on...It suits our best players style of play.

Adrian Reid and Derek Crilly are natural attacking players and Andy and Conor Rafferty have the engine and mentality to compliment them.

That sets a solid foundation for us.

Because of Foundation,

Our Tactic's  then can be worked on, yesterday we varied our approach play to Shane Lennon and it worked perfectly.

Sure, we sent some long balls in on top of Shane but we also played low ball and precise balls into space to him.

Then, on other
occasions, we used Shane as decoy, when Laois expected the ball to sent to him it didn't come.

we ran it through the middle.
or
We played the ball to both corner men.
or
we kicked from range.

On top of that our
Match Ups Worked also

It helps that the team picked on merit, it helps even more that defensively lads are asked to play to a role rather than a position. Just look at the two McGee's yesterday for Donegal for example.

It meant that it didn't matter who played where there was no confusion.
Straightaway, Derek Crilly went out right half on Begley and Dessie went right out to forty to pick up the very much overrated Donie Kingston and John O'Brien picked up Ross Munnelly
Adrian Reid then, ended up starting the game corner back! but, this became irrelevant as he knew his marking role, and his position on the field didn't matter.

As a result, It went all long way in helping us come out on top with every match up defensively.

I mentioned earlier last week that Gally has worked on his KickOuts

Be it the speed of them or the accuracy of them, they have no doubt improved and he is well able to it.

Yesterday, combined with excellent breaking runs from our midfielders and half forwards we dominated possession.

Gally's arrows were superb and fundamental to this and with gained confidence and more practice it can be improved even more so ahead of Wexford in two weeks.

Speaking of Cooley, Brian White was man of the match yesterday.

He came he saw he conquered. right from the get-go.

The thing with Whiteser if we get anything from play from him it's a bonus.

As his freetaking is what he is there for. His accuracy from placed balls is crucial.

He's the outhalf that keeps the scoreboard ticking over, he rewards the prop's hard work and it then allows them to do the donkey work that bit easier.

In fact, He demoralised Laois on his own yesterday....

Punishing every mistake they made,
every foul they made
and
kilt off any hope they felt they had in the second half.

Oh what Mickey Harte could have done with him yesterday!

So now on to Wexford

Portlaoise as good as it was, is over.
We now, need to move on, bring everything we brought that I’ve talked about above and some more.

Taking on the favourites tag and coping with the pressure of home advantage for example.

Our focus should be to stay grounded and look for a consistent performance again, not a crack at leinster.

After all, Wexford beat us more than convincingly in Drogheda and were the best team we faced after Derry all year.
They are a very good team, much better Leinster pedigree than us in recent seasons and also had an opportunity to scout us yesterday.

They'll have no fear of us whatsoever.

It is Important, like yesterday, we learn from more league mistakes, prepare for them adequately to improve as team and give ourselves the best chance to get another victory.

fingers crossed

#FortressDrogheda

Burning Questions Continued

3. Lightening Bolter

I think the term bolter came from the Lions which is in hyperbole at the moment but a bolter has made their way into AOR plans.

3 of them in fact.

He has sprung Rafferty, Bingham and Byrne all into the starting line up

I don't think its a dummy team name either i think these boys are gonna start.

Come Sunday, It will be 80 days since we beat Longford in our last competitive game.

Obviously these boys have made an impression in the build up....

In training closehand and In the challenges**** we've played versus Fermanagh, Antrim, Wicklow, Armagh and Meath also.

It shows that lads can be picked on merit and if you are showing well in house you will be given your chance no matter who you are....that's great for morale and competition for places also....especially Bingham who has come all the way from the trials back in November 2012!?

Like I say, there is no prejudice the team has been picked on form basis and because of that players will play for their manager because they believe in them and given them the chance and it means we have options off the bench out to prove a point.

We have two Ardee, Clogher and Geraldines men ready to come in......Colm Judge, is back in the squad also.....League man Kevin Rogers sitting there also.
that's 8 quality players and I haven't even mentioned Ray Finnegan, David Reid and Gary O'Hare and new additions to the panel Paddy Sheelan and Darren O'Hanlon.

****
I've been worried about the standard of opposition in these challenges, not one division 1 team, while Laois on the otherhand, have played Kerry and Cork! but this is not boxing and where the quality of sparring determines how well prepared you can be well I hope not anyway!

4.Defence Sense?

Man to man we match up Quite well

Full backline
Bingham on
Damien O'Connor

Pops on Colm Kelly
Dessie on Kingston

Halfback Line
Reido on Begley
Crilly on Walsh marked him in the league
JOB on Munnelly marked him in the league

We were alot more solid in this years league compared to last term.

However, we did concede 2-14 in Portlaoise against us and arguably there forward line is slightly stronger now.

Do we employ a risky man to man or go with a slightly different Strategy!??

I mentioned Rafferty and his role yesterday...that looks to be our best option.

Last year when Longford defeated Laois, the main problem was scoring...when the pressure came on they couldn't execute.

This we know....so it is crucial our defence is well set up and doesn't concede goals.

The game is going to be tight we have the more natural, talented forward line....if we make them work harder for scores we will go along way in beating them.

3 days to Go: Burning Questions

We've had the mock exam in the League.....but it has still left me with a few burning Questions...that I wonder will we pass come the big examination on Sunday

I will answer these in the build up to the game.

1. Midfield Warriors
PK, it starts and ends with PK...it, being our hopes.

Worryingly, He wouldn't have had the best run in to game even by his own accord, niggly injuries a stop start league have hampered him and his form greatly.

Luckily, we've had experience of playing without him.

So if Anything does happen we are well prepared.

But, I suspect PK will be PK, and have plenty in the tank... cometh the Hour cometh the man etc.....

Partner

Brian Donnelly gets the nod to partner PK, he also has been struggling of late with a virus but he's obviously come through recent challenge matches and training well enough to start. Aerially he is superb, and I feel a main reasnon he is in there, so expect him and Brendan Quigley to have a plucking battle royale.

Kryptonite

John O'Loughlin is the major spanner in the works here...on that chilly night, the 2nd of March, O'loughlin was White hot.

His driving runs exposed us in the league match and dragged Laois right back into that game. Defensively we didn't track his runs and as a result, didn't cope.

O'Loughlin is named at 6 but could possibly just swap with Conor Boyle and go midfield. Either way our Midfield's and Brian White on the forty strength is not defending and O'Loughlin's runs will have to tracked.

Rift-Raff

Hence why Conor Rafferty is in the side.....much like Begley on the wing for Laois, he is there purely to track runners from the half back line and bulk up the middle sector...for a debutant, it is alot to ask but at least he will be well briefed on the role beforehand. Which will make it alot easier for him to settle.

Variables

The Midfield battle is so crucial and like the two sides very even....we do have Ronan Carroll as an option also (hopefully a pissed off I'm dropped Ronan Carroll)
While they have Kevin Meaney in reserve.

Breaking ball will depend on hunger and the fall of the ball also...but with the likes of Andy, Jobser and Crilly sniffing about we should be okay.

The Laois Goalkeeper Culleton, hasn't a modern day Cluxton kickout either which means we have chance to get disrupt and compete for possession on their Kickouts. A major plus! and...
the fact that Gally has improved his accuracy and speed of kickouts means we have a better chance of regaining possession also.

We have the promise to dominate in the air....on the ground they might have the slight advantage but we seem to have a plan in place to even that up. How the plan plays out will depend on the day....just like the breaking ball!

2. 500 days of Shane Lennon

In recent seasons, his summer form is not as prolific as his league form.

The problem is, he is our main forward....and our plan A.

Get the ball to midfield and send Direct ball to Shane....

Be in absolute no doubt that they will have a plan in place
to counteract Shane,

1 starve him of possession
and
2. suffocate him space wise.
i.e. Like Cavan defence did on Jamie Clarke last week.

Okay, it won't be that bad as... Shane is alot bigger and physically harder to handle.

but,

We will have to be varied in our play and use Plan A to our advantage, by being patient and realising what is going on as it happens.

1. Possibly by using Shane as a  dummy up there....

We should utilise the extra space Ciaran Byrne and Maguire could be allowed and look for them first time instead of Shane.
2. Shane could come out the field, He's well able to play there aswell as confuse the Laois defence and leave them exposed with our two speedsters inside. Maguire especially.

 Also
3. We are going to have to Kick from long range.....
Whitzer, Andy, PK, Donnelly are well able to score from long range aswell as Crilly and Reido attacking from the back.

If we are bottled up this will have to a tactic employed.

4. Instead of kicking it inside to Shane. We could run the ball the whole way and drive at them and at least force free kicks in the Tyrone mould and that's where Brian White will earn his Corn especially!

Finally 5. Another way could be to take Shane off early doors if its not working adapt and change when the game is still there to be won....Jim, Judge, David Reid, Clarkie all offer something a little different and just as effective scorers...

3. lightening Bolter

4.Defence Sense?

Laois Team

Strong team there, Maybe the squads had to be named early in the week.
It gives both managers time to prep the troops on the opposition line ups.

Laois Team
Eoin Culliton;

Mark Timmons, Denis Booth, Peter O'Leary;

Darren Strong, John O'Loughlin, Padraig McMahon;

Conor Boyle, Brendan Quigley;

Ross Munnelly, Donal Kingston, Colm Begley;

Damien O'Connor, Gary Walsh, Colm Kelly.

My initial Impressions...

Conor Boyle at midfield. He's a natural Defender!? WTF?

1. he is in there to do a marking job on PK
2. There to facilitate John O'Loughlin if he goes midfield.
3. Could play a sweeper role and force Colm Begley back into the middle.

Donal Kingston, he walked off the panel a couple of weeks ago? now he starts....!

1. He will start at full forward and Gary Walsh will go to the forty where he played against us in the league.

2. Kingston in means Clancy Out, far better operator and natural fit than clancy to play the target man role.

Their Full back line

It's the same as the one we faced in the league, except Timmons is named at corner back not full back.

In that league game, our full forward line had the upperhand. Lennon in particular, he had numerous markers throughout the night. (more on Lennon tomorrow)

Their full backline needed some help, and I feel they will need it even more with Maguire and Byrne starting and upgrading our line from that night even further.

So confirming further why I think Boyle will provide it....and Begley will drop off the wing and play midfield. Under 21 O'Connor will drop out onto the wing.

Leaving Kingston and Colm Kelly inside.

Strong Bench

Justin McNulty Boasted a full bill of health recently so

NO
Meaney,
Clancy,
MJ Tierney
and
Billy Sheehan
Plus, former AFL recruit Conor Meredith in their starting line up.
means they have plenty of ammunition on the line.

4 days to Go: Louth Team Read it and Weep !

Louth Team

Neil Gallagher

Pop Rath, Dessie Finnegan, John Bingham,

John O'Brien, Derek Crilly, Adrian Reid,

Paddy Keenan,
Brian Donnelly

Andy McDonnell , Brian White, Conor Rafferty

                Ciaran Byrne, Shane Lennon,Derek Maguire

Main talking Points

3 starting Championship Debutant's

Who is John Bingham!?

White on the Forty...

No place for Gerry Hoey, Ronan Carroll and Ray Finnegan!

Have we shown our hand very early!?

will there be late changes like there was in the league?

Would Maguire not have been better off the bench?

Who said trials are a waste of time!

How are we going to set up!?

So Start talking! @Louthproud

5 days to go:Managerial coincidence

and we're off.....
the first of many posts in a build up to the big game on Sunday.

Alot will be made of the two managers this week

Laois manager Justin McNulty has already came out and spoke glowingly about his fellow Armagh comrade.

“Aidan is a meticulous planner, tactically astute, a fantastic motivator and his attention to detail is phenomenal.”

Do not be fooled this pure and utter tripe. Public tripe.

and...

expect AOR to throw some back at Justin McNulty over the next few days too.

Band of Brothers
Having soldiered together in the same defence that brought Armagh to the pinnacle. These guys are competitors and excellent at taking the attention away from their teams and talking their own chances down.

Actually the more compliments they give in public about each other, the more deep down they really want to win.

They made it at the top of the game together as team-mates. They are Students of the game.  They know exactly what they are doing.

So, Can we can call it even stevens then?.....does one former Armagh comrade hold the advantage over another?

I, personally think, McNulty has an advantage, he's been working with his squad longer, they're developmentally further down the line than AOR is with our squad and vitally this is not his first championship game, he's had a chance to learn from his mistakes.

On the flipside, AOR with his brother on the backroom team will be ultra alert and full of adrenaline on the day.

But, no matter how well they know each other it's about how well they know their players, thats where the game will be won or lost come sunday.

So please be some what immune to the tripe the papers print.

Best of Luck Winner to be announced Thursday  23rd of May

are you watching Mister O'Rourke

Here's my team of the league so far.....players that have shown form for their clubs but are not on the County Panel,

but,

Could be......

1. Kevin Brennan - SOM
Young goalie with alot to offer.....Huge Kickout and large presence around the goal mouth.
2. Emmet Hughes - Kilkerley Emmetts
Tidy and uncompromising defender who is given the task of marking Kilkerley's best opposing forwards and so far this season he's succeeded.

3. Peter Nixon - DYI SOM
One of the Nixon Clan that left the DYI and possibly the best of them. Strong and Athletic Full Back that can play some too.

4. Joesph Flynn DYI
The Irelandsers have coped surprisingly well so far this season, and the very physical strong Flynn has shown to be solid when needed for them.

5. Keith McLaughlin - SOM
A forward in recent seasons, but the switch to Centre back seems to suit him and a main reason why the Point road men are doing so well this season.

6. Darren Marks  - Cooley Kickhams
Louth Minor last season, settled in well at the heart of the Cooley defence.

7. Brian Howell - Naomh Martin
First of two players with a Rugby background he physically could play at a higher level

8. Declan Byrne - Mochta's
Elephant in the room here, but he is too talented not to be involved somewhere in the Louth set up.

9. Bevan Duffy - Fechin's
Boyne Rugby's loss has been the fechins gain this season, strong and direct midfielder and a real handful also.

10. Ruairi Moore - O'Raghaillagh's
He's the Rats go to man, shoulders alot of responsibility at an early age (21/22) and succeeding.....

11. Karl White - Pats
The pats secret weapon, their most natural forward and teams forget about when they play them, never got a spin with the county now could be the time.

12. Kevin Hearty - Brides
After a dissapointing night in Navan this under 21 player has shown some great form for the brides, on the half forward line.

13. Paul Carrie - Hunterstown
Scoring machine, look at Hunterstown's scoring tally every week and he'll be top of the pile. Has had a great start to the season in division 2 which is a step up for them and still maintaining his standards.

14. Barry O'Hare- Roche
The only player from Division 3 in the team. However Barry has always shown potential maybe the confidence of scores down there can spur him on.

15. Stephen Kilcoyne - SOM
Another from last years Louth minor Team making an impression he's top scoring and a huge threat for the O'Mahony's

Well,Have I missed out on anyone?? Whats your opinion?

Have any of your teammates been ommitted unfairly...
or
have you played against a player who has the potential!??
