O'Byrning Anticipation: The Leinster GAA Series

The competition formerly known as The O'Byrne Cup begins on Sunday, Little Christmas and for a GAA fans like myself it really is!

We clear away the clutter, take down the Christmas decorations and focus towards the upcoming year.

The Leinster GAA series main difference from the O'Byrne cup is the change in the competitions format.

From straight knockout to a league basis.

Which sees us in a group of 4 teams. A slight change, but the Objective is the same, Experimentation.

That is what these winter competitions are usually about.

However the fact that it is not straight knockout allows for a little more experimentation than normal.

Which is a great help to our new man at the Helm. Aidan O'Rourke

He is guaranteed 3 games.
He knows the dates.
and the opposition beforehand.

It is the perfect scenario for the perfect trial system.

Plus the fact that the games are so close, (3 games in a week) Players have to be thrown in and newcomers will be exposed and tested to the limit physically.

Systematic

This year however, the focus will not be as much player focused experimentation but formation and tactical based approach.

and it shows in the first competitive 15 picked by Aidan O'Rourke,

The Team to face UCD @2 in Drogheda

1. Sean Connor

2. Jaime Carr 3. Bernard Mulligan 4. Gary Connolly
                               Joes                            Mochs

5. Cathal Bellew 6. Derek Crilly 7. Adrian Reid

8. Dessie Finnegan 9. Ronan Carroll

10. Andy McDonnell 11. Mark Brennan 12. Brian White
13. Darren Clarke 14. Jim McEneaney 15. David Reid

Seasonal Bug or no Bug.

I think this team was always in his mind as he wants to see these players in action, closehand more than anyone and most importantly in his style of play.

The UCD examination Sunday will pose a number Questions.

How the new players Deal with the step up?

How Players cope in unfamiliar positions?

and

How the whole panel deal with the new system?

Hopefully they will be the first pass of many tests to come.
