Kil-Dare Report

First of all, what a game!

A truly absorbing encounter in Newbridge the other night.

The speed, intensity, atmosphere, heat, scoring taking and decision making was so hard to keep up with, and I was only standing in the Terrace!

We went toe to toe with a Division one team for 55 minutes and we’re the better team.
but. we.just. couldn’t. hold. on!

The lads, to their credit were out on their feet.

Pride in the Louth Jersey never in doubt.

Lets cast our minds back to the last time we played each other in the Championship. We all remember it - Jaysis will we ever forget it!? We blitzed Kildare and oh how we laughed at Kildare and their hard-working McGeeney regime.

The performance that day literally came from nowhere!

It was the ultimate short-term gain, long-term loss. (In fact, that whole year was...but I’ll go into that another day)

Long story short, in 2010 we were cheating ourselves.

Since that game,
They’ve improved so much, went on Qualifier run after Qualifier run and experienced big games while we’ve been stagnate in development and like the talented group we are, we nearly pulled off a victory against them after cramming a single years hard training.

Because of this, You can’t help but wonder a couple of things after Saturday night:

Lets say Aidan O’Rourke was in his 3rd and not his first year.
How good could/can we be?

What if McGeeney took us over instead of Kildare, would he have won a Leinster with us?
Should we, in hindsight have gotten to Leinster final this year?

We have better footballers than Kildare, no doubt at about it.

But,

hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

And for the past 3 years they’ve been working extremely hard and, in the last 15 minutes of Saturday night, it showed.

Nevertheless and Luckily for us, AOR is our manager now.

Better late than never. Eh?

Tomorrow the AOR effect

NewsROund

So the Championship sneakily snuck up on us......with The JFC and SHC kicking off either side of Louth Qualifier exit.....

And the result all went to form

JFC

Both Stand out Favourites Hunterstown and Oliver Plunketts had convincing wins and the westerns and Dowdashill also got a win under their belts

All four teams are out again this weekend looking to secure their Quarter final status.

Senior Hurling Championship
Like the Junior Championship there was no surprises and nothing really to see here,

as the kingpins and possible finalists Pearse Óg and Knockbridge both got their campaigns off to the best possible starts, beating plucky upstarts Mattock and St Fechin's!

Kildare Louth Myth Busters

Confidence low Facade

Sure, Kildare got a public humiliation but if you think for one minute their mindset will be the same you are in for a rude awakening.

That’s the thing about confidence it comes as quick as it goes.

Furthermore, that Dublin game was 13 days ago it is well and truly gone out of the system at this stage never mind come Saturday night.

This will be a Kildare mans first outing back in a Kildare jersey and that in itself will drive each individual players motivation on.

And like every other game after the first few minutes you settle into it and you adapt and move on.

So forget about the confidence...these lads will not line out and warm up with their heads hanging whatsoever. In fact the opposite if this is to go by.

They’ll be quite happy to play us they gave us a licking in the league in Drogheda last season.

They think and more importantly their fans think they are a top 5 side!

Every single eyeball is on them now and the dangerous combination of home town pressure they are expected to turn us over with ease!

Forget about low confidence it’s Complacency we’d want to take advantage of.

Insider Trading

Much has been made of Aidan O’Rourke and his old Armagh half back Kieran McGeeney facing each other on the line.
And the thoughts of O’Rourke possibly driving the nail in McGeeneys coffin.

You’d think they’d they’ll ease up on each other, no chance....they’re great competitors and both respect each other too much and besides thats not the myth I’m trying to bust here.

The myth I’m trying to bust is, the quality of inside knowledge that O’Rourke knows about Kildare from his time there will lead us to victory.

O’Rourke was Kildare Coach and if I’m not mistaken defence coach maybe that was Down anyway it was back in 2010 and 2011.

That’s at least two season’s ago and the turnover of Kildare squad has been huge.

They had 5 under 21’s from this year in starting side against Dublin alone.

Certainly, he’ll have a fair idea of how McGeeney works and a number of Kildare players but to think because he was in there camp before he will pick their tactics apart and their downfall no, but it might give a little edge.

Will that little edge be enough come Saturday night? We’ll wait and see.

Bogey Man, Team whatever

We have beaten Kildare in the championship in 1991, (Micko’s first game in Leinster) 1995, (Colin Kelly show on RTE’s live broadcast) 2007, (qualifier and John Crofton’s exit) and most recently, in 2010 (the navan massacre!)

Odd one out being 2000 in Croker, they beat us.....it was never a penalty!!!

one tweeter has reminded me about their win over us in 2002!

a game I had wiped from my memory after we missed free after free!

But forget about that,

Are we their bogey team?

Yes, I’d like to think so and it’s one myth I don’t want to bust!!!

Kildare Team Named

There it is....the Kildare team, no real surprises.

Shane Connolly,

David Hyland, Michael Foley, Hugh McGrillen,

Eamonn Callaghan (Capt.), Peter Kelly, Emmet Bolton,

Daryl Flynn, Padraig O'Neill,

Paul Cribbin, Niall Kelly, Eoghan O'Flaherty,

John Doyle, Daniel Flynn, Paddy Brophy
Comment: They make only one change from the team that faced Dublin.

Padraig O'Neill comes into the middle instead of Sean Hurley.

Good change for them bad change for us. O'Neill was consistent for them in Division 1 this year although not an amazing player, this switch makes them a little bit better on the ground and workrate wise around the field than Hurley.

One more thing, there is no way.....Daniel Flynn starts at full forward again.....expect Hurley to turn up there maybe or Tomas O'Connor!
Also i have to apologise, I got Daniel Flynn and Niall Kelly's names mixed up.....but what I said still applies.

I feel even more confident in taking them on now! is that a good thing? I dunno! ha!

Foley on Lennon is going to be some battle, really looking forward to it

The Team:Comment

Alot to go through so I’ll take it bit by bit over the morning and leave a comment after every line of the team.

SHANE MC COY
Comment: The biggest Surprise of all, and it shouldn't be really.

Brought back into the set up by AOR this season Who has been his clubmate at Dromintee (Armagh) over the past few seasons.

Why McCoy left the set up in the first place we'll never know? because, He was outstanding and earned player of the year during that stint.
Maybe his trip into the wilderness had something to do with his move from Roche to Dromintee in the first place or, the new management regime that opted for Snitchie and his better kick-out.
And thats the same worry I have about him on Saturday. (not to mention, making his first start in 8 years, dealing with the pressure of trying to repay AOR's faith in him and denting the confidence of an up and coming goalkeeper in Flanagan.)

No doubt about it, he is a super shot stopper some of the saves he pult off in Parnell park in the time he was number 1 were the best I've ever seen in goals for Louth but, like I said yesterday quick kickouts and accurate and varied arrows will go along way in beating Kildare.

I must confess I haven't seen his kickouts since 2005! or a couple while he warmed up in Drogheda during the league so the jury is still out on this selection but, if his kickout has improved in 8 years then it could be a masterstroke of a selection.

POP RATH
DESSIE FINNEGAN
JOHN BINGHAM

Comment:  The same faces in the same places as per normal here, in our most and only settled line this season. Thats fine, I like that our Full back line is settled.

but, It's hard to know what sort of a side Kildare will line out with a possible reconstruction of their team after the Dublin game it makes it even tougher to assign marking tasks.

Dessie will go on the tallest of their inside forwards....be it Brophy, O'Connor, Dowling or Hurley

Bingham either on Kelly, Smith Seanie Johnstone

Leaving Pop on John Doyle? #inpopwetrust and all that but Pop's game is tight spaces and tight marking inside forwards not roaming and running after the deep lying Doyle?

I feel Bingham is good enough to pick up Doyle and do the roaming and man marking role all evening. It is actually perfect for his game.
Whether he is trusted with the Job of marking their spiritual leader I'm not so sure.

Also: Either Pop or Bingham could be given the task of picking up the fidgety Daniel Flynn* Niall kelly on the forty. Sacrificing their game would go along way in stopping kildare's forward play and it would allow Crilly to play and maybe the more experienced Jobser can pick up Doyle.

Reminder: Does anyone remember the marking Job Mick Fanning done on John Doyle? not once but twice he shut him down in 2010 and 2007 Doyle will be delighted not to see mick striding over to him Saturday night.

JOHN O BRIEN
DEREK CRILLY
RAY FINNEGAN

Comment: Rayzor is back and hopefully with a bang, we'll need him attacking and making all his trademark mazey runs from Deep if we are to win.

For him to come back in it was Reido or Crilly that was going to be squeezed out.
Injury doubts and the lower risk move means it was Reido rather than Crilly.

I think Crilly plays and stays centre back regardless of who is on the forty (more than likely the previously mentioned Kelly) Crilly will be hovering around that general area picking up running from the middle and then starting off moves. He was outstanding against Laois and when he attacked he was a threat against Wexford too. The more aggressive attacking Crilly is on Saturday night the better chance we have!

PK
BRIAN WHITE

Comment: PK is like the keystone on this team and it seems like a constant job trying to find a partner for him but the fact he's outshining his partners so much is, maybe the reason why, Donnelly and Carroll are not selected!
Brian White comes in this Saturday and I like the partnership.
1. as an attacking force
2. for reuniting the successful 2010 midfield partnership.
and

3. It's the same type of midfield as Dublin (mobile, high work rate and attack minded)

Sure you can worry about White's defence but Daryl Flynn and Sean Hurley are not the type of midfielders to expose us in that area.

They are big men and good in the air but we more than compensate on the ground and thats where we'll try to hurt them.

Remember: 2007 was the year Brian White and his free kicking talent came to light...he kicked scores from everywhere truth be told it was there, right on the touchline under the stand in Conleth park that that the phrase 'White Special' was born!

CIARAN BYRNE
CONOR RAFFERTY
ADRIAN REID

Comment:
This is where it gets messy for me and trying to read AOR's mind.....

Ciaran Byrne on the wing when he's played inside all year so I expceted he'll drift closer to goals when the match starts.

Conor Rafferty on the forty for the first time this season, Raffo has come in for alot of flak this season by Louth fans but he's more than worth his place on the team, he's fit strong and puts in alot of work, he might take a tad out of the ball but how and ever he'll not be put on the forty to create but to cover midfield runners, compete in there and be a kickout target.

Reido, as I mentioned earlier got squeezed out of the half back line but, I still expect him to attack with abandon, occupying Emmett Bolton and keeping him on the back foot much like Paul Flynn did.

This is such a phantom half forward line as all 3 players could easily not play where they are named.

DEREK MAGUIRE
SHANE LENNON
COLM JUDGE

Comment:
This is the line that is going to win the game for us. end of.
Lennon has been in super form all season, Maguire is Due a goal and a good game to boot and Judge will revel in his new role again.

They need to be more fluid and more aware of each other though, being selfless on Saturday night is key.

The more open and fluid we are, the better chance we have off unlocking their defence especially on the tight Newbridge field and Goals win games

allow me to go off on a tangent to explain
GGGGGGoals

In todays game, possession football and defences are making GAA like soccer and the value of a goal is nearly the same value and contributing just as much to the winning team.

Not only are they worth 3 points....its the boost it gives the whole side and psychologically also.

case in Point Lyng's and Banville's goal for Wexford was such a blow timing wise more than anything because they came when We were on top.

I really think we need to score goals Saturday night to win.

Lets have a goal in each half target and policy!

The BENCH
Comment: Injuries and the frantic nature of the qualifiers will mean these lads are going to be called upon.
Luckily we possess plenty of power and quality on the line. I'll go through the cover.

Flanagan GK
Peach
Donnelly

Ronan Carroll
Bevan Duffy

Midfield Cover: is very strong and all can play on the half forward line too

Pepe

Jim
Clarke
kevin Rogers
Forward Cover:4 forwards with 4 different talents....all 3 could do a a varied job on the night if needed.

P Sheelan
G Hoey
Connolly
and
C McGuinness
Defence cover: Experienced and inxperienced cover for both lines of defence there. Gerry Hoey has to be the unluckiest man in the new regime!?

Raspberry Swirl

Okay, we know the blueprint (literally) on how to beat Kildare having watched the dubs do it

So How can we play like Dublin?

here's a couple of ways the reds can raspberry swirl the lilywhites on saturday night

Attack-Attack-Attack
Call them Naive, call it tactical suicide but Kildare went one on one with Dublin at the back and got exposed.
If they didn't do that against Dublin then they aint doing it against us.

Sure, we don't have the firepower of Brogan, Kilkenny and Mannion but we can force overlaps and take advantage of a one on one situation especially after the Antrim tatics.

Ray Finnegan, Adrian Reid, John Bingham, Paddy Keenan, Derek Crilly and Ronan Carroll are very attack minded players for non attackers. They are well able to play the running game and can force this pressure on Kildare just like McCaffrey, McCarthy and MD mcAuley did for Dublin.

Lets play with the freedom of Dublin and just go for it and attack in numbers. We stopped doing it against Wexford and paid the price, Derek Crilly was rampaging before his outlook was adjusted either by management or a defensive mindset.

To beat Kildare we need to attack and when we do, it needs to be in numbers.

Quick Kick outs

Our Number 1 Goalkeeper Gally is out through suspension, but no reason why Joe Flanagan can't step up into the plate and do a job.

He's played in an Leinster under 21 final last season, made one of the best saves i've seen and has been his club, O'Raghallaighs first choice keeper for years.

We know he has a booming left footed kickout and the Accurracy also

but, can he clip them short, quick start moves on the fly and does he have the confidence to do so.

I think he can...and it's vital he does.

thats all for now! Should have more tomorrow too
