5 Days to go!!!!

Things I'm looking forward to the most

1. How our lads react to the Hill.

2. Rugby Season over, Rob Kearney will line out on the Square.

3. Mark Brennan (Massive performance in him)

4. Half/Dub Fitzer wandering over to the Dublin Dugout by accident.

Westmeath Report PrevieW

Sunday was a bit like Groundhog day,

Westmeath.

Opening round.

Bad Performance.

........Result!

Games like these, with high expectancy, usually results in lethargic start and that was exactly the case.

Like our team selection, We were predictable and possibly stale as a result, With all this nervous energy We lacked a spark...

Westmeath on the other hand, had their circuits sparking all over the field,
Paul Sharry’s rumoured switch to centre back did happen, and to great effect. John Heslin Started the game and lived up to his reputation and Dennis Glennon’s turns were themselves, electric!

But, and it is a big but, they didn’t take their chances.

Championship 4W HEad2heAD

Who: Westmeath
What: Leinster Senior Football Championship First Round
When:
3:30pm
Where: Navan

As supporters, this is what we are all about.
Be it Sunshine championship, ice cold league or die hard O’byrne cup ones, we all anticipate the taste of white hot championship action.
The., all on the day, knockout, hard ground, new ball stirs an emotion in us that brings out the passion we have for our county.
It is also there, we Judge.

You could play 50 good league games for the county and 1 bad championship match, and that is where, and how you will be remembered and judged.

Players know all this, as they are the lucky fans who get to pull on the jersey. They get the opportunity to impact the outcome whereas we don’t. however we don’t go through the sacrifice they do.

All these factors stir the emotions in the player, good players use the emotions to help them perform, where bad players crumble.

That, is what makes championship special.

Navan will be the perfect canvas for both sets of artist’s; its vast field will suit both sides to create hopefully a Leinster football masterpiece.

Such is the quality of Leinster football at the moment this game is becoming increasingly hard to call. Both sides survived the drop from Division 2 and took huge confidence off the back of it.

Since then though, momentum might have dwindled.

I would worry about the predictable nature of our team selection; the exodus of players to America will have done nothing to help the lack of competition for places, whereas Westmeath have had the opposite in squad developments, an Garrycastle contingent injection and the return of a Mullingar emigrant, John Heslin from Australia.

But still this is championship, where you go to battle side by side with your fellow comrades and the 15 starters from Louth are very settled and know each other’s game, inside out.

That unity will hopefully stand to us.

HeAD to HEad

With the absence of Dessie Finnegan (not Dolan ha), it brings us some fortune as it means we play with a more modern, versatile defensive unit, days of the big full back are long gone. Liam Shevlin typifies the modern game fast, strong runner and dynamic, who can man any defensive position, who he will pick up more than where he actually starts will be more important. Dennis Glennon usually starts out the field so although he is named 14, don’t be surprised if he plays out the field. Shevlin gives us three perfect options, 1. go with him 2. Go out centre back and let Jamie mark him or 3. Stay full back and cover.

Actually, any of one of our defenders can slot in, anywhere in our defence.

With the exception of one

Ray Finnegan/James Dolan
Pound for pound, they are both well matched, and in basketball terms both players are  swingmen for each team. They are both fluid in defence and attack. How many times have we seen Ray swing momentum for Louth and St pats with surging runs? Well, Dolan does/has the same role for Garrycastle and Westmeath. Ray has to start on him.

In that crucial area of breaking ball, where 16 players will battle for possession. Our midfield has the mobility to come out on top.

Depending on the outcome of Paddy Keenan/John Heslin
Keenan the best in Leinster and Heslin the man who would be king. A very talented player for the past few seasons now has his chance to prove his worth. He did after all leave a lucrative Aussie rules contract behind him so he could play in days like this such was his love of GAA. He has terrific hands and footpassing, shot taking accuracy but hopefully PK will make him long for a land down under.

We have selected, what I believe our best equipped forward line, they have the balance of workrate, creativity and scoring power just right.

Speaking of Scoring power the Darren Clarke/Kevin Maguire Match up is our most crucial. Kevin Maguire was Westmeaths under 21 captain this year and believe it or not played in the 2010 semi final, marking Colm Judge (remember him) quite well that day too.

Clarkey this year has been a different animal when it comes to scoring. We’ll need that hunger for scores from him tomorrow if we are to progress.

Things to expect: NO Complacency from Louth we will have learned from Carlow last year, a different Westmeath team from the league with no less than 7 new faces from that cold day in haggardstown, Fitzer sporting a pair of shorts if the sun is anyway out , Dessie Dolan in an Elvis costume telling Westmeath people ‘I’m not retired baby,I’m just having a break’ , and Our Westmeath hex to continue to 5 games won in a row (Gulp, nobody mention law of averages).

DEBATE TO FOLLOW

As per Usual, Fantasy and best-of teams, Cause some debate. As duly it is their sole purpose, to get people talking!
and hats off to the Irish independent they've got us talking.

All 15 players are true servants to Louth football doe but some are more no brainers than others.

Case in point Gerry Farrell, who's Louth's career spammed 3 decades that will be, forever hard to beat, PK also, our only All Star, enuff said. and our two corner forwards, White and Kelly, both players of a generation and really makes us groan over the lack of success and waste of talent we had over the 90's.

I know nostalgia has a lot to play and big profile names have a great draw especially when it comes to a national selection.

This usually results in players being pushed to unnatural positions Just to make the team, at the expense of some really talent players.

My complaints with this team are and I always will have my complaints!
Considering for such a small county. we have 1 all star and 3 nominee's I was surprised all nominee's couldn't find a place on the team...

In case you don't know who they were Danny Nugent who made this team and the other two were, the late great Damien Reid and John O'Brien.

Both Outstanding players and really should be on the best of Louth side's. Now. and ever going forward!

Wild Card picks for me would be, Simon Gerrard,
A really class act and soldiered with Louth pre the professional era, when he was his preparation's were second to none.

Another would be JP when he first burst on to the seen he was electric!

and one for future, Shane Lennon. his scoring records are second to none and he still has plenty to play when we look back with nostalgia we'll regret we didn't appreciate his scoring power more.

Championship Week: Order of the week

MONDAY: Dolan Pressure

TUESDAY: The Irish Independents Louth Team

WEDNESDAY: Championship fever, prediction symtoms and diagnosed cure's

THURSDAY: My team to Face the Westies

FRIDAY: selected Team analysis

SATURDAY: 4W's

and much much more!

Championship Week: Dessie

We start off the week with the only News Story Westmeath have been mentioned in over the past few months!

'Dessie Dolan'

He's finally put an end to the speculation about his possible return

and well done Dessie enjoy your 'break' see you soon, possibly in an RTE studio!

Good boost for us, but we never really expected him to togged out in Navan anyway.

The point is, other than this, Westmeath have been keeping a very low profile and the opting out of Dessie, takes some more pressure off the Westmeath squad going into the Louth game.

The Louth squad hopefully will be very aware of this and remain focused on the task ahead.

Championship Countdown

10 days till the Westmeath Game and here's 10 reason's to be either optimistic or pessimistic!

5 Reasons to be Cheerful

1. We've had our Club games stir the blood recently, now, from here on in quality GAA on our screen's every weekend....I can hear the Sunday game theme tune in my head already da. da. da. du du DAH
2. Andy McDonnell, it seems has gone against the grain and negated against a trip to America this summer, great boost. Could have a massive part to play for us this summer.
3. Ehhhhh only ten days away!! less than 240 hours!! is not reason enough to be cheerful!
4. Dessie Dolan reluctance to come back into the Westmeath set up will not instil much belief in their camp and for their supporters. not a bad player either!
5. Westmeath's recent bad form: Bad Challenge match defeat against Meath does not bode well for them.

5 Reasons to be Glum (uncheerful?)

1. Brutal RTE Coverage of the GAA!!, Pundits giving out!! aboutwhat? hmmm let me think of the top of my head? about the state of the game in early rounds and poor standard of referring...Sort it out!!! bit like groundhog day at this stage, lads!

2. Lack of Under 21's that have been drafted into the panel, feels like we have missed an opportunity for talented players to get acclimatised to the county set up, Messrs Williams, Murray, McKeown, Woods, Reilly and Flanagan especially.
3. Square Ball Rule, we could be sneaky and be working on tactics to bambozzle Westmeath, turn a game, unsettle their great Shot stopper and create a goal scoring chance but somehow I doubt it, and I predict not till after the game where Gally has been trampled on and conceded 6 goals! will we start to look at the rule change seriously.

4. The number of Exiles, Brian White, Brian Donnelly, James Califf and Cathal Bellew. Not only a  massive loss to the squad, but their knock on impact on training, team spirit, preparations and depth could be devastating down the line.

5. Westmeaths recent bad form: they can't be as bad as they have been recently and  could be lying in that long grass waiting for Championship to cause an upset. Yikes!

Division 2 After Party

Here's a run down of the Winners from the Division 2 awards Wrap up Party

Best team Award: Tyrone for me, although Kildare
came out on top in the Decider, they were streets ahead of other teams in the division.

Worst team Award:Meath it just has to be them, for the pathetic way they feel off the face of the earth.
Dark horses Award: Galway only for a  last minute winner by John Doyle the ycould have been in Croke park.

Best Ground Award:Some really great grounds but Pearse Stadium in Galway has it all, nice pitch, compact, grounds, super new Stand and Supermacs at every corner of the ground.honourable Mention Clones super parking facilities but just too vast of a ground to fill for a league game

Worst Ground Award: Drogheda....next award quick

Best Atmosphere Award: Opening 5 and last 5 minutes of the Meath game, relief and a ton of tension

Worst atmosphere Award: Westmeath game in Haggardstown was like a challenge match!,  players intensity can't have been helped by the lack of crowd participation in the freezing cold.

Best looking fans: Yep we still  ain’t see nothing like a Galway girl
Ugliest looking fans: Westmeath (I wish I could say meath but meath mother and lover I know i know love is blind)

Nicest jersey: Louth's new warm up gear displayed in Clones gets my vote!
Ugliest Jersey: Derry's has so much potential but not at all nice

My Team of Division 2

G Connaughton
O Lyons, Darren Hughes, E Bolton
C McCarron, P Harte, G Bradshaw
R Carroll, J Doyle
M Conway, P Finlay, M Donnelly
D Clarke, P Bradley, K Coney

Any Problems with that team Mail me or tweet @louthproud for a discussion

Best Goalie: Gary Connaghton, a constant Shining light for Westmeath, started his campaign with a great save in the opening minute against Louth.
Honorable mention: John Devine can't even get in the Tyrone team! made 3 or 4 top class saves against louth in drogheda, one from mark Brennan in particular.

Best Defence: Tyrone, conceded a paltry 69 points in total, best form of attack for them is offence! but they work so hard as a team slash system to snuff out opposing attacks

Defender: i don't get much right but when i do, you are going to heat about it, Ollie Lyons from Kildare was tipped by me to the best defender and was, scored a vital winner for the lillies against Meath which turned their season round.
Honorable mention: Gareth Bradshaw and Cathal McCarron two of the best right half backs around love to get forward but not as tight as you's like going the other way.

Best midfield: Our midfield unit with or without PK was highly impressive and gave us the platform all year whether on the ground or in the air,.

Midfielder: PK wasn't fit enough to dominate and no real outstanding midfielder out there! So I've given the two slots to Wing forwards! who floated in and out of the middle sector over the league campaign. John Doyle  & Ronan Carroll, They both  had a pretty impressive ends to the campaign vitally shining by getting on the scoresheet.

Best forwards:
Monaghan's full forward line tore us a sunder!! We couldn't handle the nippiness of mcGuinness, Freeman inside and Jap killing us with free's and Gollogy's pace with Eoin lennon's power we were no match, hence the 2-24 drubbing.

Forward:
Take a bow Darren Clarke, spoke about Clarkie yesterday and don't want to be giving him too fat of a head with Championship in 16 days.

Honorable mention: Stephen Bray, class player and really tried against Louth we were happy to  see him out the field away from goals.

Best Freetaker: Paul Finlay , one of the best around, Ultimate calmness personified.
Worst freetaker: Kieran Martin Westmeath man didn't shoot the lights out of Haggardstown, skyed numerous frees, maybe we shouldn't be too harsh on the natural defender.

Top Goalpoacher : Surprisingly top goalscorer was Peter Harte with 5 goals!! serious tekkers although few peno's in there he scored a great goal in Drogheda

Mail me or Tweet me @louthproud if you agree or don't agree with the above!

MY PREDICTION'S from NFL IN A NUTSHELL 1st of FEB

Live NFL Division 2 8 weeks later) Wrap up Party

Right before the league I did a pieCe called 'the NFL Division 2 in a nutshell.'

Lets go back and see how my mystic Meg prediction's turned out!!

Best Case Scenario: win all our home games both local away derbies and with 10 points get promotion and win the final in Croker against Meath.

Worst Case Scenario: Lose the opener and hammered in every game there after.

Most Likely Scenario: Beat Westmeath at home, but ultimately get relegated gaining a few moral victories along the way

The actual Senario: was actually somewhere in between....

The Good.

The Meath game in Navan, to end the league and relegate them will be a Highlight to many a Louth fan for a long time to come. But I was most impressed with the first two games we played,

We focussed right before the league that beating Westmeath straight away was badly needed, if we were to have any chance of surviving we had to get a good start, and we did.

Honourable mention, the finish to the Derry game to grasp a point was riveting stuff.

More Good,

Darren Clarke as Colum Corrigan said 'the find of the season for Louth' OK, maybe not a find, but only for his accuracy we would have been struggling. to help us survive, Louth needed someone to step up and play irrationally good, DC was that man.

Not only were his scores inspirational, they were consistent, either from play or frees. They gave his teammates a constant source of hope, which then instilled  much needed confidence throughout the team, hebce the good performances.

Speaking of finds, Step right up Jim McEnaneny, has to feature largely in the Good section, made a huge impact on our campaign aswell as kicking some wonderful scores. Top of the singles chart most weeks....but seriously his development has been a massive boost for the present nevermind the future!

The Bad.

Away from home if we picked up anything, it was going to be a massive bonus. but then in reality we had to reassess our capabilities with a Moral victory slash draw in Salthill, when in reality we really should have beat them.

A Bad point dropped. BAD Point!!!

Also

Over the seven Games we conceded 9-93!! now that is quite bad, That is an average of more than a goal and 13 points a game.

Come Championship time we need to tighten the ship or there could be trouble ahead.

and the Ugly...

That win against Westmeath (my god was it ugly!!!)

Then, you have that atrocious last 20 minutes in Clones, Decky foolishy got sent off and I thought we were gonners!!! Yes!!, we were that bad, and on that particular day Westmeath picked up a draw with Derry. Squeaky bum time loomed.

'Meade & Wardy getting the line, and to lose by so much and then the head boys trying to get rid of poor Banty'

Sorry this goes into Meath's Ugly section!!!

but, No matter what county you are from it really did get Ugly, for the Royals!

I like the fact that the Good paragraph is the longest!

 MORE TO COME TOMORROW
