First of all, what a game!
A truly absorbing encounter in Newbridge the other night.
The speed, intensity, atmosphere, heat, scoring taking and decision making was so hard to keep up with, and I was only standing in the Terrace!
We went toe to toe with a Division one team for 55 minutes and we’re the better team.
but. we.just. couldn’t. hold. on!
The lads, to their credit were out on their feet.
Pride in the Louth Jersey never in doubt.
Lets cast our minds back to the last time we played each other in the Championship. We all remember it - Jaysis will we ever forget it!? We blitzed Kildare and oh how we laughed at Kildare and their hard-working McGeeney regime.
The performance that day literally came from nowhere!
It was the ultimate short-term gain, long-term loss. (In fact, that whole year was...but I’ll go into that another day)
Long story short, in 2010 we were cheating ourselves.
Since that game,They’ve improved so much, went on Qualifier run after Qualifier run and experienced big games while we’ve been stagnate in development and like the talented group we are, we nearly pulled off a victory against them after cramming a single years hard training.
Because of this, You can’t help but wonder a couple of things after Saturday night:
Lets say Aidan O’Rourke was in his 3rd and not his first year.
How good could/can we be?
What if McGeeney took us over instead of Kildare, would he have won a Leinster with us?
Should we, in hindsight have gotten to Leinster final this year?
We have better footballers than Kildare, no doubt at about it.
But,
hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.
And for the past 3 years they’ve been working extremely hard and, in the last 15 minutes of Saturday night, it showed.
Nevertheless and Luckily for us, AOR is our manager now.
Better late than never. Eh?
Tomorrow the AOR effect
